Scholarship Application: Reflection
In 2015, I defended my dissertation, “Investigating the Development of Possible Selves in Teacher Education: Candidate Perceptions of Hopes, Fears, and Strategies,” at Kansas State University. Findings supported the utilitarian, investigative, and evaluative qualities of the theory of possible selves (discovery). Research efforts resulted in the receipt of the KSU School of Education Graduate Award, recognition as an Emerging Scholar by the National Association of Teacher Educators, publications in a peer-reviewed journal, and a myriad of conference presentations (integration). Research skills and knowledge obtained allowed me to ground course and program development, administrative decisions-making, and my service to the profession to understand professional identity development. The ability to interpret, synthesize and connect theory across disciplines provided me opportunity to serve on editorial boards and review manuscripts for The Teacher Educator, The Advocate ATE-K Journal, and the Journal of Teacher Education. Artifacts throughout the portfolio provide evidence of the application of this academic discipline to real world problems. One such societal concern that has spurred these efforts, is the nearly 8 percent of the teaching workforce leaving the profession every year (Learning Policy Institute, 2016). Recognition of this problem motivated efforts to advocate for and elevate the teaching profession. Serving as the president of the Kansas Association of Teacher Educators, on the executive board for Educators Rising, and being appointed to two Kansas Department of Education committees, the Evaluation Review Committee (ERC) and the Kansas Advisory Committee for Career and Technical Education (KACCTE), provided a platform to apply my doctoral research to support change across the state. Most recently, my work with KACCTE allowed me to develop an informational video outlining how districts across the state of Kansas might establish Educators Rising (ER) chapters. ER chapters would catalyze, inspire future educators, and support districts in developing grow-your-own initiatives to reconcile teacher recruitment concerns across the state.
